METAGAME Book Club July 15 - August 16, 2014

metagame by kaezenovka, on Flickr

ISTE's Virtual Environments Network and the Games & Simulations Network will be doing a summer book club from July 15 - August 16, 2014.

It involves reading publications, a really great book, going to websites, watching videos and even going in game. So there is no question about it – the book club is a Book Club +.

This book club has 2 tracks. There are Game Studies (great for English and humanities teachers) academic readings with Sherry Jones, the creator of the Rhetoric and Games or rgMOOC.

The second track will be facilitated by the educator’s gaming guild, Inevitable Betrayal. The book for the second track, is the young adult book, For the Win by Cory Doctorow (great for economics, social studies and anyone looking to engage their students in reading). It is also gives an insider look into massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMOs and MMORPGs).

For The Win is available on Kindle, in print or you can download the free version at http://craphound.com/ftw/download/

Thursday at 8 pm ET

ISTE Professional Development Webinar
Crafting the Core: Assessing Minecraft for Learning
Presenters: Trish Cloud, Tanya Martin and Kae Novak

During ISTE 2013 in San Antonio, the most widely discussed virtual world was an 8-bit, Lego-looking, user-created sandbox game known as Minecraft. After the conference, SIGVE continued the discussion about the popular game with online office hours, Minecraft open houses and a virtual Minecraft UnSymposium in December 2013. In this webinar, SIGVE members will show how they have been aligning the learning in Minecraft to Common Core State Standards, ISTE-S Standards (formerly the NETS), and Computational Thinking. Welcome to the Inevitable Fashion Shoot Experience pre-shoot prep!
Icecrown Citadel or as it is called by the locals, ICC, the bane of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, will be the setting for a high-fashion WoW shoot. Fashion event producer and Horde stylist, Grid, who was featured in her own special, will be on hand to help models with their fashion choices, poses and battle pet accessories. http://youtu.be/pgoyahIqPxY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgoyahIqPxY&feature=youtu.be

This event sponsored by Shaomai's House of Fashion will be looking for the screenshot that could be featured or even be on the cover on VEJ. On hand will be several screenshooters whose work has graced the pages of VEJ , AERA’s Applied Research in Immersive Environments for Learning as well as the Inevitable Betrayal http://www.flickr.com/groups/inevitable/ and SIGVE http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigve/ Flickr sites.

Cover model Izzy/Notalemur, http://virtualeducationjournal.com/ will be there to help neophyte MMORPG models and afterwards introduce models to Timeless Isles high society.

Award winning Machinimatographer, Blue Lowtide, will also be on hand to capture fiero moments, elite rings, in-raid pings and 6 uncommon pets.

Now we didn’t get permission from the Lich King, but Rebecca and the rest of the Retro Raiders took care of securing the location. This may very well be the first fashion shoot there in years.

Rebecca told us, “After clearing ICC and defeating the Lich King, I remember turning to Hemoato and saying wouldn’t this be a perfect location for a high fashion shoot. But it wasn’t until Grid talked to me about the Holiday Fashion Extravaganza at one of Shaomai’s infamous cocktail and mining parties, that I realized that there was no other place that said Fierce Fashion like the ICC throne room.”

So come and strike a pose and rock your best Ugly Sweater, Snowman avatar or santa suit. Well make sure to keep your toon warm with a bit of retro raiding and NPC killing in between takes of your glam shots.
